Topic: When to Stop Statins? The New Evidence-Based Statin Deprescribing Guideline
While statins are effective, their risk to benefit profile changes as people age. For older adults with frailty, limited life expectancy, and complex health, the continued benefits are uncertain. With these complexities, the consideration to deprescribe statins comes up routinely in clinical care. This session will highlight the work done by deprescribing.org to develop an evidence-based guideline to support clinical decision-making about deprescribing statins.
At the end of the session, participants will be able to:
Describe the evidence and recommendations about statin use and deprescribing in older adults .
Apply a stepwise approach to deprescribing statins through case-based examples using the deprescribing.org statin guideline algorithm.
Identify shared decision-making strategies to determine the best option for individual patients.
